When the IRS Won’t Cut You a Break

My client was heartbroken.  He had owed over $800,000 to the IRS.  We got him a partial pay agreement of $120 a month which would potentially save him over $500,000.  It took close to year to get the agreement, with a ton of back and forth with the IRS.

Two years later he called me and said “Can you help with this notice?”  He had gotten a notice from the IRS that they have revoked his agreement.  He was adamant that he had made all of his payments and filed and paid all of his current taxes.

We called the IRS and got his account transcripts, and it turns out his agreement was canceled b/c of $75.  When he filed his 2024 return, he was late by several weeks and there was $75 dollars of interest due.  By the time he realized this and paid the $75 (it was three months later), the IRS had already canceled his agreement.

Even worse, they were now sending him intent to levy notices.  We tried getting his payment plan reinstated but they were adamant he needed to provide updated financials and go through the process again.

The IRS is not looking to give anyone a break. Any letter from the IRS needs to be dealt with right away.  If you owe back taxes,  find out what programs are available see what is the best option for you and your family.
